Department of Emergency Medicine

Emergency medicine is the medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of patients seeking urgent care, unforeseen illness or injury, who may be very critical to very stable. It encompasses a unique body of attitude, knowledge and skill towards patient care. The practice of emergency medicine includes the triage, initial resuscitation, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and disposition of any patient requiring expeditious medical, surgical, or other specialty care. Emergency medicine may be practiced in a hospital-based, freestanding emergency department (ED), in an urgent care clinic, in an emergency medical response vehicle or at a disaster site.

Emergency medicine professionals provide valuable clinical and administrative services to the emergency department and other sectors of the health care delivery system. These may include and are not limited to:

  • Pre hospital emergency medical response system
  • Active triage process and Resuscitation
  • Emergency evaluation for unforeseen diagnosis
  • Active participation in communication and documentation
  • Active participation in the direction of the emergency department patient intake process
  • Focus on quality disposition of patient
  • Participation in emergency department continuing medical education
  • Emergency department leadership and attitude development
  • Active participation in updating and establishing emergency department policies and      procedures
  • Direction towards research and evidence based medicine
  • Participating in community awareness programmes
  • Emergency Department at PSG Hospitals:

    The Department of Emergency Medicine at PSG Hospitals was established in the year 2007 from the old Casualty. This 25 bedded Emergency Room functions 24 X 7 round the clock and is manned by qualified professionals, trained paramedics, adequate support staff, advanced instruments and equipments.

    The department comprises of:

  • Prehospital care
  • Triage zone
  • Medical resuscitation area
  • Trauma and surgical resuscitation area
  • Pediatric resuscitation area
  • Obstetric and gynecological resuscitation area
  • Toxicology resuscitation bay
  • Point of care testing and Bedside Ultrasound
  • Emergency OT
  • Observation area
  • Decontamination area for disaster management
  • The department is supported by multiple facilities:

  • Intensive care units
  • Operation Theaters
  • 24 x 7 Laboratory services
  • X-rays, Ultrasound, CT, MRI & other diagnostic facilities
  • Wards & Other maintenance services.
  • Courses offered in Emergency Medicine:

    1.Masters in Emergency Medicine [MEM] – Duration 3 years

    The courses are accredited by ‘Society for Emergency Medicine, India [SEMI]’.

    Eligibility & Selection Criteria:

  • Candidate for admission shall be required to possess the following qualifications:
  • He/she must have a qualified MBBS Degree
  • Obtained permanent registration certificate from any one of the State Medical Councils.
  • Candidates possessing degrees from Foreign Nationals are required to produce the passes results of the FMG Screening exam
  • Those fulfilling the eligibility criterion will be called for a personal interview following which the admission list will be drawn
