Types & Forms of Surgery for cancer/tumour:
  • Surgery to diagnose cancer
  • Surgery to stage cancer
  • Surgery to cure or debulk cancer (radical surgery)
  • Surgery to cure cancer while preserving important functions (conservative surgery)
  • Surgery to prevent cancer (prophylactic surgery)
  • Surgery to support patients with cancer (Palliative or supportive surgery)
  • Reconstructive surgery

Surgery to cure cancer (Radical Surgery) is different from other surgeries. In Radical surgery, we remove the tumor along with some normal surrounding tissues and the related lymph nodes so that we can remove the cancer completely. This is also called R0 resection. Incomplete or inadequate surgery is the most common cause for cancer recurrence.

Conservative surgery is as radical as required (removes all cancer tissue) while preserving important organ functions e.g. Breast conservation surgery

Newer surgical techniques for cancer, like robotic or laparoscopic surgery, laser surgery, cryosurgery, radiofrequency ablation, etc., are less invasive, use different types of latest innovations. This leads too many advantages for the cancer patients, like:

  • Smaller wounds
  • Less pain
  • Shorter recovery times.
  • Better and early completion of treatment
  • Good cosmesis
  • Preservation of important functions

Robotic Cancer Surgery has proven to improve patient-related outcomes. PSG is the first hospital in Coimbatore to have the state-of-the-art fourth generation da Vinci X Robot and to offer Robotic Surgery for cancer patients at an affordable cost.
