Neonatology

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a referral center providing comprehensive service to both inborn and outborn neonates. The department has 17 bedded neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and handles about 600 sick neonates in NICU per year. The department has multidisciplinary support from departments of Fetal Medicine, Pediatric surgery, Pediatric cardiology, Cardiothoracic surgery, Developmental pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology and Rehabilitation services. The department runs a Kamadenu Human milk Bank which provides donor human milk to sick babies in NICU. The department has received a Level II B accreditation from National Neonatology Forum of India and offers Fellowship course in Neonatology to Doctors and Fellowship course in Neonatal Nursing to nurses. In addition to care of sick newborns the unit also provides care and support to normal newborns born in the hospital. Approximately 3000 babies are born in the hospital every year. The mother- baby dyad in the postnatal ward is well supported to promote breastfeeding. All babies are routinely screened for jaundice, thyroid disorders, congenital heart disease and hearing problems before discharge.

Facilities available

NICU is equipped with mechanical ventilation, CPAP, HFNC, High frequency oscillatory ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, incubator facilities, transport incubator, bedside echocardiography and ultrasound machine.

Procedures and screening done

The following procedures are done in the NICU: ventilator support, surfactant therapy, chest tube placement, umbilical venous line placement, umbilical arterial line placement, per-cutaneous inserted central venous catheter placement (PICC line), total parenteral nutrition, exchange transfusion, peritoneal dialysis, lumbar puncture, invasive blood pressure monitoring.

The convalescing newborn babies are specially screened for retinal problems and hearing problems.

Faculty

The babies admitted in the department are well taken care of by a team of doctors with years of experience in handling sick neonates. The department is headed by Dr. Ramesh, MBBS, MD, DM (Neonatology) with more than 10 years experience in the field. The care for the babies is provided by a team of dedicated nurses.
